The Startup Classroom brings together Sonoma State University School of Education with Sonoma County Office of Education and the support of Maker Media to offer a new Maker Certificate Program, the first certificate program of its kind. The program offers a series of mini courses designed for people seeking to lead Maker activities in schools, clubs, community centers, libraries and other organizations.
To Become Maker Certified
Educators must complete:
- 5 CEUs or 50-hours of mini courses (mix and match courses from the current course list)
- Courses range from $250-$600
- Online courses available.
- Create a Maker Portfolio
- Design a Maker action project for specific learners
- Total cost to become Maker Certified: $1,500

Understand the core values and principles of Making
Learn pedagogical practices for empowering learners to explore Making and a Maker mindset in school-based settings
Design an action plan for implementing Maker activities in a learning environment
Begin to consider ways to integrate Making in a variety of learning environments
Begin to align Maker projects with Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards
Become part of a Maker educator network
Receive mentorship from local Maker educators, including SSU faculty and K-12 maker educators
Earn 5 CEUs
Maker Certificate demonstrating that they have met the expectations of the program and become eligible to teach in the Maker Certificate program
