IMPLEMENTING MAKER ED + NGSS

for tk-8

Maker Education and NGSS: An Overview for Implementing Maker TK-8 is a two-day course that supports participants’ Maker mindset and shows how implementing these activities give a deeper understanding of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Ideally, participants will work in site-based, place-based and/or grade level teams to examine their own learning environments to determine how to best introduce and/or extend their own -- and site-wide -  culture of Making. As participants engage in Maker activities and reflect on how their experiences cover NGSS, they will work to develop the implementation of Maker activities at their site(s). Participants will engage in reflective conversations with one another and the instructors as to how Making fits into the shift to Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Instructors: Carinne J. Paddock and Patricia Amend-Ehn

Course Goals:

  1. Develop a personal sound-byte for what Maker means to each individual participant through access to the following: videos, self reflection, discussion, Making, and written resources.
  2. Team break-out sessions each day to develop a timeline/calendar of events for a specific site that include but are not limited to Cardboard Challenge, 5 Minute Film Festival, Hour of Code, Rocket Making and Rocket Launches, Invention Faire, Maker Faire, Maker Summer Camp.
  3. Experiences will include: wind tube investigations with a tie into NGSS, spontaneous group challenges, tinkering and power tools, and circuit building.

Assessment:

Each participant will outline his or her own “next-steps” as a Maker Educator to foster Maker mentality and activities in participant’s own learning space and in coordination with Team’s site-based plan. Participants will develop a materials and resource list for submission to site’s leadership with next steps in funding specific Maker activity within their sites.

Credit/No-Credit:

This course is credit/no-credit. In order to earn credit for the course (and CEU), you must complete the “next-steps” and a materials list/resources in a google document that is shared to both instructors’ emails (or discuss an alternative assignment with your instructors).
